Dedicated Membership

Applying for your Dedicated Firearms Licence - Criteria for Dedicated Membership of the CTSASA
In order to be declared a Dedicated Member, he/she must first fulfil the criteria as laid down by the Accredited Sports Shooting Organisation.
For the CTSASA, the criteria are as follows:-

  • a) Must be a fully paid up Member (i.e. paid up to club, province and CTSASA). The subscriptions must have been received by the CTSASA. Payment to a third party does not constitute payment to the CTSASA.
  • b) Must have shot at least 200 competition targets at either club or provincial level within a year of applying for the Dedicated Membership Certificate. Targets must be shot at a CTSASA registered club over CTSASA disciplines.
  • c) Must successfully pass the Dedicated Member Training Course (not yet operational – January 2009 – so ignore this criteria)
  • d) Must continue to shoot 200 competition targets per calendar year at either CTSASA club or CTSASA provincial level.
  • e) In certain limited and clearly deserving cases the Executive of the CTSASA may issue a dedicated certificate to a person who has not complied with the criteria specified for obtaining a dedicated member certificate.

Dedicated Member Certificate

  • The Dedicated Member Certificate is a document that is signed by the designated Responsible Person of the CTSASA (currently the Executive Officer). This certificate is counter-signed by a Commissioner of Oaths.

  • Certificates cannot be issued unless the criteria above are met.
  • Certificates are produced and mailed once a week.
  • Certificates are only required for those members who are renewing licences or applying for new licences.
  • These certificates are not issued each year.

Additional Information

  1. The old Bona-Fide Sportsperson certificate (under the Arms & Ammunition Act 1969) was a separate certificate. It did not form part of the licence that you carried around with you. A firearm licence holder applied for the certificate as a separate task from applying for a firearm licence. This certificate is no longer valid, although it does carry “weight” if you like when you re-apply for your firearm licence under the Firearms Control Act (FCA).
  2. Under the FCA, there is no separate certificate for a Dedicated Sportsperson which can be obtained from the police.
  3. Under the FCA, there are two categories of licence:-
    • a) Occasional – up to four firearms may be licenced to the person
    • b) Dedicated – over four firearms can be licenced to the person
  4. Occasional Licence – intended for the first time owner or for those people who do not participate in sports shooting (or hunting) on a competitive/serious basis.
  5. Dedicated Licence – intended for serious hunters and competitive/serious sports shooters.
  6. In order to qualify for a Dedicated Licence, part of the requirement is that you must be a Dedicated Member of an Accredited Sports Shooting Organisation.
